PF67 – LI15 ⎥ Apartment building

Berlin⎥ Construction year ca. 1900 ⎥ Gründerzeit building

PF67-LI15 is a typical example of a Gründerzeit building. These very much define Berlin and date back to the period between 1871 and 1914, an era of economic growth and rapid population increase. These multi-story apartment buildings are characterized by ornate facades in the Historicist style, featuring stucco decorations, high ceilings, large windows, and iron elements.

To address the housing shortage, entire neighborhoods with “Mietskasernen” (tenement blocks) were built, divided into front buildings, side wings, and rear buildings. While affluent residents lived in the more prestigious front buildings, working-class families were often crowded into the less desirable rear buildings.
Many of these structures were damaged during World War II, but many examples have been preserved and restored. Today, they are a significant part of Berlin’s identity and architectural heritage.
